An alleged mugger was arrested hours after he escaped from police custody at Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) after stabbing an on-duty constable last night.
Imam Hossain Akash, 24, was arrested early today from the Kumira area of Chattogram's Sitakunda, while his associate, who is known as Picchi Akash, was arrested from Patenga during an overnight drive, said Panchlaish Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Solaiman.
Imam had fled from Ward No 28 of CMCH after stabbing constable Delowar Hossain, who was guarding him. He had been admitted there under police custody after being caught earlier in the day for mugging Chinese national Li Xiang Feng near Gate No 5 of Chattogram Port.
According to police, around 12:30pm yesterday, three muggers attacked Li, stabbed him in the knee and snatched his mobile phone and other belongings. Locals caught Imam after a chase and handed him over to police following a severe beating. Both Li and Imam were taken to CMCH for treatment.
Police said Imam used an oil-like slippery substance to loosen his handcuffs before stabbing the constable and fleeing, triggering panic among patients and attendants.
Following an overnight operation, police tracked down Imam and his accomplice in separate locations. Both have been taken into custody for further interrogation.
