Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin today said the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) has become a global concern, urging the creation of a 24-hour system to combat misinformation during the upcoming national election.

"Abuse of AI has become a global headache. Like any tool, it can be used for both good and bad purposes -- by a doctor to save lives or by a robber to commit crimes," the CEC said at a seminar titled "Integration of Artificial Intelligence in Upcoming National Parliament Election to Counter Misinformation and Disinformation" at the Electoral Training Institute (ETI) in Dhaka's Agargaon.

The event was organised by the IDEA Project and the Capacity Building of ECS in Use of ICT in Electoral Process (CBTEP) Project of the Election Commission (EC).

Nasir said the EC is working to integrate AI into the election process to ensure transparency and prevent misuse. He stressed the need for a round-the-clock monitoring mechanism capable of detecting false or misleading content as it appears.

"It has to be a round-the-clock job," he said, stressing the importance of detailed planning on staffing, coordination, and connectivity with remote areas.

Election Commission Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said AI is subtly affecting various aspects of life through misinformation, which has disrupted activities worldwide.

He added that around 92 percent of elections globally are now being questioned due to the harmful influence of AI. "To hold a fair and participatory election, we must work together to curb the misuse of this technology," he said.
