The government has approved a 7.5 percent house rent allowance, with a minimum of Tk 2,000, for teachers and employees of MPO-listed non-government educational institutions, effective from November 1.
According to a Finance Division order of the finance ministry, the allowance will later rise to 15 percent, also with a minimum of Tk 2,000, from July 1 next year.
The order was signed by Deputy Secretary Sharifunnesa.
Education Adviser CR Abrar has termed the decision "a truly historic moment" for the education sector, saying it reflects the state's recognition of teachers' demands and contributions.
"Teachers deserve far greater respect, and it is the state's responsibility to help improve their living standards," he said in a press statement.
He added that the education ministry, along with the advisory council and Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that teachers' voices were heard and understood.
The Finance Division also said the move was made in consideration of the government's current budget constraints. The benefit will apply subject to compliance with existing recruitment rules and MPO policies, including the Non-Government Educational Institutions (school and college) Manpower Structure and MPO Policy 2021, the Madrasah Manpower Structure and MPO Policy 2018, and the Vocational, Business Management, Agriculture Diploma and Fisheries Diploma MPO Policy 2018.
The notification clarifies that no arrears will be payable and that all financial regulations must be followed in disbursement. Any irregularities will remain the liability of the paying authority.
Administrative ministries have been instructed to issue necessary government orders and send four copies to the Finance Division for endorsement.
