Police yesterday arrested a former Islami Chhatra Shibir leader for allegedly assaulting on-duty officers at the Hathazari Police Station compound.

The arrestee, Md Raihan, 27, is a former Shibir president of Hathazari Govt College.

The incident occurred around noon at the upazila Sadar, police and local sources confirmed.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Hathazari Circle) Kazi Tarek Aziz told The Daily Star that police had earlier conducted a drive and arrested several suspects in connection with the murder of a schoolboy, who was beaten to death on Tuesday. Raihan then came to the police station, identifying himself as a Shibir leader, in support of the accused.

"At one point, Raihan got into an altercation with on-duty police officials and hurled abusive words. Later, he physically assaulted a policeman, after which the police detained him," said the Additional SP.

He added that Raihan was sent to court after being shown arrested in a case filed against Jamaat-Shibir men for attacking police at CU Gate No. 1 on the night of October 15. Police also confirmed that another case will be filed over yesterday's assault.
