Police arrested a former Students Against Discrimination (SAD) leader in a cybercrime case filed with Shahbagh Police Station in Dhaka early today.
The arrestee is Sakib Khan, former member secretary of the Bogura unit of SAD, said police.
Members of DMP's cyber and intelligence units detained him around 4:30 am from his residence in Naruli area of Bogura town, said police sources.
Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge Khalid Monsur confirmed his arrest to The Daily Star.
The case was filed on October 20 by Sub-Inspector Shahidul Islam of the police station.
Asked about the allegations, OC Monsur said, "Sakib has been accused of being involved in "transfer trade" involving government jobs. He reportedly messaged officials and took money from them in exchange for transfers and promotions. Evidence of financial transactions has been found against him."
Following Sakib's arrest, students and locals in Bogura formed a human chain this afternoon under the banner of "General Students and Citizens", demanding his release and the repeal of the Cyber Security Act, 2025.
Protesters said Sakib had played a notable role in the anti-discrimination student movement and the July uprising.
