Former inspector general of police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun became an approver to "save himself" by concealing his own crimes and putting the blame on others, said Amir Hossain, the state-appointed counsel for ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal.
Amir made the remarks at the International Crimes Tribunal-1 today, while presenting arguments for the third consecutive day.
He also questioned the procedure through which Mamun's deposition was recorded, alleging it was not done properly.
A three-member tribunal, led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder, heard the defence's arguments in the crimes against humanity case filed over offences committed during the July uprising.
Regarding the testimony of Mahmudur Rahman, editor of Amar Desh, the defence counsel said, "My argument is that he is an opponent of Sheikh Hasina. He disliked her rule. He doesn't like anything about her."
Amir further said, "Mahmudur Rahman was not even in the country during the incident. He was abroad. During Sheikh Hasina's tenure, he was imprisoned and fined. That experience created resentment within him, and out of that anger, he has said more than what he actually knows. Whether such statements made out of anger should be accepted or not, I believe, is up to the tribunal."
Earlier, in July, former IGP Mamun pleaded guilty in the case and offered to be a state approver, which was approved by the tribunal.
