A constable of Dhaka Metropolitan Police has been sent to jail on charges of raping a 12-year-old girl in Narayanganj's Bandar upazila.

The accused Md Ruhul Amin, 41, was working with the DMP's Dhanmondi Traffic Division.

He was arrested Monday night and produced before a court on Tuesday, following a case filed under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, said Liaqat Ali, officer-in-charge of Bandar Police Station.

Ruhul from Munshiganj's Tongibari had been living in a rented flat at the Rupali Residential Area in Bandar.

According to police, the incident took place at the constable's residence.

He was detained in Chashara area of Narayanganj city on Monday evening while accompanying the victim.

Later, he was handed over to Bandar Police Station by the Sadar Model Police around 1:00am on Tuesday.

The victim, a domestic worker from Madaripur employed in Dhaka's Kalabagan area, is currently receiving treatment at the One-Stop Crisis Centre of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, OC Liaqat said.

According to the case statement and initial investigation, the girl was found crying near the Kalabagan police box on Monday afternoon, where Ruhul was on duty.

"He took the child to his flat in Bandar and raped her. While returning to Dhaka later that evening, the girl began crying again in Chashara, which aroused suspicion among locals who informed police," Liaqat said.

Kaium Khan, in-charge of the court police outpost, confirmed that Ruhul was sent to jail following a court order this afternoon.
