A Dhaka court today placed Enayet Karim Chowdhury, a US citizen of Bangladeshi origin, on another five-day remand in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

With this, he has been placed on a total of 12 days' remand in three phases in the same case.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate GM Farhan Ishtiaq passed the order after the Detective Branch of police produced him before the court with a seven-day remand prayer, said a court police officer.

On September 15, Enayet was placed on a two-day remand, followed by another five-day remand on September 17.

According to the case documents, Sub-Inspector Azizul Hakim of Ramna Model Police Station filed the case against 55-year-old Enayet on September 14 -- a day after his arrest in Dhaka for suspicious movement and alleged conspiracy to overthrow the interim government.

Enayet was arrested on September 13 on Minto Road in Dhaka. He was later produced before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court and sent to jail.

The case statement said, "During primary interrogation, Enayet confessed that he came to Bangladesh as an agent of a foreign intelligence agency with the objective of overthrowing the present interim government." The claim was initially supported by data found on the mobile phones seized from his possession.
