A 16-year-old student was beaten to death allegedly by a group of teenagers in Hathazari upazila of Chattogram today.
The victim, Md Tanvir, was a class nine student at Alipur Rahmania School and College in Hathazari and son of Abdul Barek from Munshipara in the municipality.
Witnesses said a group of 10–15 teenagers attacked Tanvir near the old municipal office on Alipur Road around 1:30 pm, leaving him critically injured.
He was rushed to the Hathazari Upazila Health Complex and later shifted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH), where doctors declared him dead, said Monjur Kader, officer-in-charge of Hathazari Police Station.
A classmate of Tanvir said a conflict arose between two groups of students -- from class nine and class ten -- at the Alipur Rahmania School on October 15, over filming a clash on mobile phones. Tanvir reportedly tried to mediate the dispute but became a target of class ten students involved in the feud. Today, Tanvir and a friend were taken to Alipur Road, about 500 metres from the school, under the pretext of resolving the conflict, where he was attacked.
OC Monjur Kader also said the motive behind the killing is being investigated, and efforts are underway to apprehend the perpetrators. The body will be handed over to the family after the autopsy.
