Buet student arrested under Cyber Security Act for obscene remarks about women
A student of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet), identified as Shrishanta Roy has been arrested under the Cyber Security Act 2025 after screenshots of his obscene and derogatory comments about women on Reddit sparked widespread outrage and campus protests.
Duty Officer of Chawkbazar Police Station, ASI Mohammad Hasan Ali, told The Business Standard this afternoon (22 October) that Buet authorities filed the case against the student under the Cyber Security Act.
"He has been shown arrested in the case and sent to court," the ASI said.
The controversy erupted late Tuesday night when screenshots of Shrishanta's remarks went viral on social media, prompting hundreds of students to gather on campus.
Students initially rallied outside the Directorate of Student Welfare (DSW) office, breaking open its lock, before moving to the Central Shaheed Minar to demand Shrishanta's expulsion and legal action against him.
In response, Buet authorities held an emergency meeting around midnight, chaired by Professor AKM Masud, director of the DSW. The meeting was attended by Shrishanta's father, Deputy Commissioner of DMP's Lalbagh Zone Malik Ahsan Uddin Sami, several university officials, and eight student representatives.
Protests erupt at Buet: Student suspended over 'obscene and derogatory remarks about women'
A student who attended the meeting told The Business Standard that the administration decided to temporarily suspend Shrishanta's studentship pending investigation and initiate legal proceedings.
Following the incident, Shrishanta was kept under protection inside his dormitory amid escalating tensions on campus.
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation among Buet students, who are demanding exemplary punishment and immediate steps to prevent similar offences in the future.
